What means craniosacral therapy exactly?

The craniosacral therapy was developed at the beginning of the 20 th century by Dr. Sutherland, an American Osteopath. The American doctor John Upledger helped to establish this therapeutic approach in the USA in the 70's.

The craniosacral therapy is a very gentle but intensive and deep reaching physical therapy. It involves the pulsating rhythm of the liquor, the fluid surrounding the brain and the spinal cord. Besides the rhythm of the heart beat and the breathing rhythm there is an additional rhythm of the liquor, which pulsates at about 6-12 beats per minute. This fluid flows through a system consisting of membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, reaching from the skull (= cranium) along the spine down to the sacrum.

The result is a wavelike movement within the body, called the craniosacral rhythm. It is as important to the body as the breathing rhythm and our heart beat and has a great impact on our health and well being. This rhythm can be sensed along the entire body. The power of the liquor has been called “Breath of Life” and it was attributed important self healing powers.
